Let there be light; ‘Here for Good’ Construction Update

And on the 27th day of the renovation, the foreman said, “Let there be light.” And there was light! Work on Fellowship Hall (pictured above) and the solar panel installation continues at the Antioch Campus—and both projects are making excellent progress. The solar panels should be completed in early June as long as we have enough dry days. The Fellowship Hall renovation continues ahead of schedule. Stay tuned for information about transitioning worship to Fellowship Hall so that work may begin next in the Sanctuary. Learn more about the ‘Here for Good’ capital campaign HERE.

The Theology of K-Pop Demon Hunters: June 7-21

“K-Pop Demon Hunters” is a 2025 American animated musical. The story follows a K-Pop (Korean popular) girl group named HUNTR/X, who lead double lives as demon hunters. The film began streaming on Netflix in June 2025 and became the most watched original title in Netflix history with more than 500 million views. “K-Pop Demon Hunters” receives acclaim for its animation, visual style, voice acting, story, and music. In this sermon series, we will explore the themes of good and evil, shame, identity, and the power of community. If you missed the first sermon, find it HERE.

Summer Socials

Linger after worship this summer, drink some coffee, and learn something. This Sunday, June 14, we will discuss “K-Pop Demon Hunters” in Friendship Hall (Mission Campus) after worship.

Preaching Plans

While Pastor Rodger is away this summer on a well-deserved sabbatical (beginning July 1), Village Church pastors—past and present—will command the pulpit and preach on different ‘words of faith,’ such as evil, joy, forgiveness, revelation, commandment, eschatology, and transformation.

We will welcome former senior pastor, Rev. Tom Are, Jr., on two Sundays (July 5 and Sept. 27) at the Mission Campus. Rev. Tom Are was the senior pastor at Village Church from 2004 to 2023. He is retired and living in the Kansas City area once again, having spent several years in Chicago with his wife, Carol, serving as an interim pastor at Fourth Presbyterian Church. It will be a privilege and a delight to hear the word from our longtime friend and pastor, Tom, again!

livestreamED RECITAL

Featuring Dr. Bickers

On Wednesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. (CST), Dr. Elisa Bickers, the co-director of music and principal organist at the Mission Campus, will present a solo organ recital at Methuen Memorial Music Hall outside of Boston. Methuen opened in 1909 and is the home of the first concert pipe organ ever built in the United States. This instrument is on the “bucket list” for many professional, American organists; it is a tremendous honor to be invited to perform at Methuen.

As the U.S. reaches its 250th birthday this year, Dr. Bickers created a program to celebrate Juneteenth titled, “Sojourns: In Honor of Juneteenth.” Even though July 4, 1776, marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, freedom for the wider population did not occur until Texas’ slaves were freed on June 19, 1865. Her program will include pieces that evoke the idea of journeying towards a better world, including several moving settings of spirituals.

beyond our walls

Tallgrass Creek

There are more than 40 Village Church members who reside in the Tallgrass Creek senior-living community in Overland Park. Village Church pastors and staff host quarterly gatherings there to help us stay connected. On June 2, we received a thank-you note from one of the church members who lives there. She wrote, “Sunday’s service was wonderful, beautiful, and inspiring. Many thanks and blessings to all!” Our next gathering at Tallgrass Creek will be Sept. 3.

This is one of the ways we can be with those who cannot get to church services or activities consistently—bringing prayer, presence, music, and encouragement. In doing so, we strive to follow Jesus’ call to compassionately love one another.
