Village for Gun Sense invites you to be informed: Here’s what we’re doing and why

Kansas has bills ready to move.

The Kansas Legislature is back in session and Village for Gun Sense would like to encourage you to add your voice of support for the following gun safety bills to let legislators know that you care about kids and gun safety.

Kansas has three great bills in the House Committee on Federal and State Affairs. It would be even better to see them pass and move along to the Senate. (Click on the bill names for direct links.)

  • HB2167 – Requiring firearms and stun guns to be stored in locked containers, establishing crimes for failure to store such weapons where a person under 18 years of age has access to such weapons and creating more severe penalties for firearms with large-capacity magazines.
  • HB2198 – Enacting the gun violence restraining order act to authorize the issuance of protective orders prohibiting the acquisition and possession of firearms by certain individuals.
  • HB2379 – Requiring the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to establish a Kansas voluntary do-not-sell firearms list to prevent the purchase of firearms by any person who voluntarily registers to be placed on the list (aka Donna’s Law). This bill had a hearing and needs a positive vote from the committee.

You can help these bills out by making yourself known to a few of the representatives on the committee. The Kansas session started Jan. 12, 2026, and the legislators are thinking about what they need to do. Give them guidance by sending them an email. You can copy and paste the following or create your own:

Subject: Please consider these bills

Dear Representative,

Firearm-related incidents are a significant concern for the safety of children and vulnerable citizens in Kansas. Three bills currently before the Federal and State Committee represent important steps toward saving lives, protecting families, and ensuring the well-being of our communities. I respectfully encourage your support in advancing these measures through the committee to help keep our children and families safe.

HB2167 – Requiring firearms to be stored in locked containers and makes it a crime to leave them accessible to anyone under 18.

HB2198 – Would allow courts to issue a gun violence restraining order to temporarily block proven violent individuals from acquiring or possessing firearms.

HB2379 – Directs the KBI to create a voluntary “do-not-sell” firearms list so people can choose to block themselves from buying guns (also known as Donna’s Law). This bill had a hearing and is waiting on a vote.

Sincerely,

Your name, etc.
