Kenyan Mission Team Returns

God is good. All the time.

Our team of 15 returned to Kansas City, Spain, and California last Friday after almost two weeks in Kenya. They were guests for several days in Thwake, the hometown of Rev. Dr. David Nzioka, where they set up shop to host a medical clinic—serving about 1,100 people over two days. Doctors, nurses, and our volunteers helped with vaccinations, routine lab work, blood pressure screening, minor surgeries, ophthalmology and dental procedures, fluoride treatments for children, medication dispensing, and cancer screenings. Rev. Maggie Johnson Phillips, Rev. Sam Phillips, and Rev. Nzioka helped lead worship at an outdoor ‘crusade’ as well as Sunday worship in Thwake. The group ended their journey with two days of game drives in Masai Mara national reserve. More stories and photos to come! (Make sure you follow Thwake Village Partnership.) Thank you sincerely for all your support and prayers.

You scream. I scream. We all scream for 50 years of ice cream socials!

The 50th annual Ice Cream Social will be from 5-7 p.m. this Friday, June 27 at the Mission Campus. Come for ice cream with all the fixings plus hot dogs, popcorn, games, and activities in the north parking lot. You may park in the south lot and the elementary school lot across the street. This is a free, family-friendly event, so invite your neighbors and friends, too! Then stay for the kids’ drama camp performance at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

A brief rain storm on June 7 didn’t ruin our 5th annual Juneteenth Celebration. Folks simply gathered under the pavilion for the free, community barbecue lunch (servers were volunteers from Hillcrest Covenant Church) and the rain was finished in time for the West African Drum & Dance performance. Thank you to all the Village Church volunteers who helped staff the bounce houses and other kids’ activities!

green tip of the week:

Close doors to any unused rooms. This minimizes heating/cooling costs in unoccupied areas. *Village Presbyterian Church is a certified Earth Care Congregation.

“But few things are needed—indeed only one. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.“

As you heard the story of Jesus, Martha, and Mary in worship Sunday, Rev. Melanie Hardison talked about the sin of sloth being the sin of acedia (neglecting God). Is acedia the emotion many of us feel right now? A strange combination of distraction, listlessness, and undirected anxiety? What we may be missing is authentic connection. Connection to our God and to each other. Translated from its Greek origins, acedia means a “lack of care.”

When we intentionally care for others—through service, hospitality or attentive listening, for example—we show love for neighbor and God. The malaise subsides. Find ways to use your God-given gifts and connect with others HERE.

Worship Times

9 and 11 a.m. (Sanctuary) and 4 p.m. for the Gathering service (Sanctuary, during Friendship Hall renovation) at the Mission Campus
and 9:30 a.m. at the Antioch Campus.

Let’s stay connected.
