New Vocab
As part of our Words of Faith summer preaching series, Rev. Anna Owens unpacked the word “orthodoxy” at the Mission Campus last Sunday. She asked us to think about what doctrines we might be clinging to in these fraught days that could cause us to forget what we are called to do. “What things in the life of this church, or in your own life, are we so committed to that we lose sight of the heart of the matter? That we lose sight of who we are and whose we are.” Rev. Maggie Johnson Phillips preached on the word “eschatology” at the Antioch Campus—a sermon she will bring to the Mission Campus on Aug. 2. Last Saturday, Village Church volunteers served at Uplift, a mobile outreach for those experiencing homelessness in Kansas City. Three nights a week, Uplift takes four Sprinter vans loaded with hot meals, clothing, and other essential supplies out to this community. Volunteers meet people at parks, their camps, wherever they are—typically serving 250-400 people each night. Started in 1990, the Uplift vans have never missed a night!
Uplift is 100% donation-based and run almost completely by volunteers who believe in the power of unconditional love and kindness. To learn how you can volunteer or donate, visit their website.
Serve
Books for Young People Needed – One of the biggest literacy challenges is getting age-appropriate books into homes. In August, we are collecting books for pre-K children through young adults for Front Porch Alliance. Donations can be placed on the white bookshelves at the north and south entrances at the Mission Campus. Thank you!
Excess Produce Drive – During August, please bring excess produce from your gardens to the Antioch Campus and we will deliver it to the Village Food Pantry. Donations can go in the Food Pantry Bins located by the doors.
Cross-Lines Volunteer Opportunity – Every even month, an Antioch Campus team serves lunch to 100-150 neighbors in need at Cross-Lines Kitchen. Join us on Friday, Aug. 14. Learn more HERE.
Driver needed for home-delivered meals – Village has several teams of drivers who deliver meals to the elderly and persons living with physical disabilities in our community. Meals are picked up around 10:30 a.m. from the Matt Ross Community Center and the route takes about an hour to complete. We are currently in need of a person or persons to deliver meals one Thursday a month. For more info, contact Leslie Conrad (913-226-7245).
August Blood Drive – Donors are desparately needed during the summer when the supply wanes. Donate between 1-6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, in Room 132 (Mission Campus). Sign up HERE and enter the group code BT. Walk-ins are also welcome.
Engage, Grow, Celebrate
Seniors Afternoon – 1 p.m. this Friday, July 31, Room 230 (Mission Campus). Enjoy games and social time with other seniors. Bring your own board games, learn to play canasta, and spread the word! Questions? Email Deana Petty.

Stellar: A World Beyond Limits – 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3. Room 126 (Mission Campus). What if every conflict, inequality, and environmental crisis had the same single, root cause? What if understanding that root cause could divert humanity’s path toward a world beyond scarcity, conflict, or need? Environmental activist Bill Roush will lead this discussion.

Monthly Grief Support Group – 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Room 232 (Mission Campus). Anyone on the grief journey is welcome at this professionally facilitated support group. A Prairie Sky Counseling therapist leads the conversation on first Tuesdays.
Vases Needed – Each Sunday, chancel flowers are divvied up and delivered to members who are hospitalized or going through a tough time. Please bring glass vases you no longer need to either reception desk at the Mission Campus. The ideal size is about 6 inches tall, roughly the size of a large peanut-butter jar.

Service Saturday – Noon-2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 15, Room 8 (Mission Campus). We will collect and package feminine hygiene products for Giving Hope & Help to support those experiencing period poverty.

Use a refillable bottle rather than buying bottled water. A plastic bottle can take about 450 years to break down in a landfill. And roughly 8 million tons of plastic bottles enter the ocean each year.
