The Theology of K-Pop Demon Hunters: June 7-21

“K-Pop Demon Hunters” is a 2025 American animated musical. The story follows a K-Pop (Korean popular) girl group named HUNTR/X, who lead double lives as demon hunters. The film began streaming on Netflix in June 2025 and became the most watched original title in Netflix history with more than 500 million views. “K-Pop Demon Hunters” received acclaim for its animation, visual style, voice acting, story, and music. In this sermon series, starting June 7, we will explore the themes of good and evil, shame, identity, and the power of community.

June 1 Session Round-Up

Last night, at their meeting, the Session:

  • Called a congregational meeting for Sunday, June 14, following all worship services, for the purpose of approving the 2026/2027 Terms of Call for pastors and electing Ruling Elder Henry Sewing to fulfill an unexpired term on Session.
  • Approved Ruling Elder Nancy Gatewood as commissioner to the June 9 Heartland Presbytery meeting.
  • Upon recommendation from the Trustees, Session adopted the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026 in the amount of $7,598,535.
  • In Rev. Dr. Rodger Nishioka’s report, he gave an update on the ongoing search for a Pastor for Congregational Care (interviewing a candidate later this month, in conversations with others), more detailed plans for his sabbatical and preaching plans for his time away—including two Sundays (July 5 and Sept. 27) when Rev. Update from Haiti

At the Higgins Brothers Surgicenter for Hope in Fonds-Parisien, Haiti, Ted Higgins, MD, (Village Church member) held a staff meeting for those who could attend (pictured right, in teal scrubs) on May 22. The surgicenter, celebrating its tenth year, has almost 100 employees working throughout its campus. The leadership team spoke of merit-based pay increases, tenure-based vacation, laboratory needs, and other employee welfare topics. “There is such a dedicated team of healthcare professionals working here!” Ted shares. Trauma and surgical care is needed more than ever—as Haiti continues to be plagued with issues of security, governance, and economic fragility. Nationwide, only 10% of inpatient healthcare facilities are fully operational. We give thanks to the nurses and physicians who work tirelessly to provide healing and hope to their patients.
