A fresh approach to faith formation
Learn what the buzz is about! After reading hundreds of survey responses, and with great thought, care, and collaboration across ministries, we have completely re-tooled Wednesday evenings at the Mission Campus with families, singles, couples, young adults, youth, children—everyone—in mind. Wednesdays@Village will begin on Sept. 16 and go through Nov. 18—ten weeks of dinners and faith programming for all. Read more HERE.
Revelation and Belonging
“This story [Acts 8:26-40] shows us that revelation requires two things and only two things. One who has truth. One who has a story. One who has something that needs to be shared. And one who is willing to listen. That’s all revelation is. The courage to speak and the humility to listen.” –Rev. Alice Whitson
At the Mission Campus, Rev. Alice Whitson dove into the word ”revelation.” But not the book of Revelation; she will leave that topic for Pastor Rodger to cover in a fall sermon series. Find her revelatory sermon on our YouTube Channel, here on our website, or download the podcast. Pastor Diane preached on “belonging” at Antioch Campus, a sermon she will bring to the Mission Campus this upcoming Sunday. Pastor Alice returns to Antioch to talk about “sanctification” on Aug. 23.

Books for Young People Needed – One of the biggest literacy challenges is getting age-appropriate books into homes. In August, we are collecting books for pre-K children through young adults for Front Porch Alliance. Donations can be placed on the white bookshelves at the north and south entrances at the Mission Campus. Thank you!
Excess Produce? During August, please bring excess produce from your gardens to the Antioch Campus and we will deliver it to the Village Food Pantry. Donations can go in the Food Pantry Bins located by the doors.

green tip of the week
Plan ahead. When running errands, make a plan and combine trips to reduce your driving and save gas.
Creation justice. One of the initiatives of Presbyterian Church (USA) and several other denominations is the annual Season of Creation: Sept. 1 (World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation) through Oct. 4 (Feast of St. Francis). It is a time set aside to reflect on and celebrate God’s creation with prayer and faithful actions. This year the theme is: “Living Water” based on Ezekiel 47: 1-12, emphasizing ecological healing, the restoration of barren land, and the responsibility to care for the common home as we work together for the renewal of Creation.

A Summer Sanctuary
La Paz Kids Club
The average age of the summer campers was nine or ten. I can almost see each of them: José, Gloria, Marie, Benjamin, Lucas, Carmen. Their homes surround Grandview Park Presbyterian Church, a sister church in Heartland Presbytery. Jobs are few and far between in their neighborhood and the fear is great. These days, worship services at Grandview Church occur only online to protect some of their members and they miss the chance to pass the peace and the communion plate.
Yet it was in this environment that Grandview Park hosted La Paz Kids Club as it has done for more than three decades. Nearly 50% fewer children attended this year, but fun was had by all. There were games, crafts, and trips to the swimming pool and skating rink. For some, this was their first trip out of their neighborhood. Yoga, baking, and crochet lessons were offered as well as typical educational classes. Of course, there was time to play tag on the lawn, to sing, and make a new friend. Their teachers did a lot of sympathetic listening, too. Active bodies were sustained by both breakfast and lunch. And, not surprisingly, Jesus was there with them, holding their hands, reminding them of one of scripture’s most frequent phrases, “Be not afraid.”
On their behalf, I want to say thank you to the Village Church members who helped make La Paz Kids Club possible. Because of you, these children had experiences of fun, safety, and learning about our God in whose image each was made. Volunteers are always needed, so give La Paz camp some consideration next summer. –Jay McKell, Immigrant Advocates Group, part of the Social Justice ministry of Village Church
