A Message from Brooke

Hi Lighthouse Grown-Ups, 

Hold on to your hats…the end of school is near!  We’ve had a blast with your kids this school year and look forward to a fun and meaningful summer with them as well!  We give our amazing teachers the summers off and I bring in a group of high schoolers and college kids to help with our summer programming.  It’s a blast so don’t be a stranger this summer! 

Beginning on Sunday, May 31^st, we are going to have Summer Hybrid Worship for Lighthouse kiddos and families.  We will all start out in the sanctuary together.  (We will have iPads set up outside the sanctuary for you to complete your kids’ check-ins and receive nametags as usual.)  Kids will have a little fun in “big church” with their families and then the teachers will walk kiddos up to the Lighthouse after the children’s time. 

Why are we doing this?  Good question!  We’re going to try it out because research and experience both show that the most significant influence on a student’s faith beyond high school is regular worship with their family. Because of that, we’ve designed our summer routine to include shared worship. 

Speaking of family fun, join us as we come together for our “Family VBS” (Vacation Bible School).  Each June (before the summer vacation mass exodus), we gather three evenings to practice serving our neighbors as whole families.   

It’s a blast!  We serve dinner and eat around tables together and then do tangible work (for ALL AGES) to serve others.  Here are our gatherings this summer: 

June 4: Juneteenth Celebration (Meadowbrook Park)
June 10: Village Food Pantry (99th & Mission)
June 15: Compassion Fix Studio (Village on Mission)

Lastly, our amazing Children & Family Ministry teammate, Kenyon, is setting sail.  Kenyon has been with us for 8 years and is a phenomenal human and logistical ninja and we are going to miss her so much!  But she has an awesome job opportunity with a local crew of therapists and coaches with Compassion Fix.  Kenyon will be missed dearly, but we join her with enthusiasm for her next chapter. 

That said, we are looking for a new part-time teammate in our office!  Let me know if you are interested or if you have someone in mind that might be great.

FAMILY VBS: 6-7:30 p.m., June 4, 10 & 15. Village Church at Prairie Village is hosting their annual intergenerational Vacation Bible School (VBS) this summer designed for the entire family—parents, grandparents, little kids and big kids alike! We’ll have learning, games, fun and food for the whole family. Dinner will be provided for all. VBS will be three Wednesday evenings this summer: June 4, 10 and 15.

We will provide tangible, immersive family experiences with three local non-profits—one each Wednesday. We will explore what it means to love God’s people and how we might widen our wingspan in our efforts. ICE CREAM SOCIAL: 5-7 p.m., Friday, June 12. Our annual Ice Cream Social will be on Friday, June 12th in Friendship Hall and the south
parking lot. Pastors and staff will serve the ice cream and Children’s Ministry will provide games and activities. We hope you’ll join us for this family friendly event!

VILLAGE CHURCH MUSIC & DRAMA CAMP: Registration opened Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. Join us for a fun week of singing and acting as we present “Are We There Yet?” the story of Moses and the journey to the promised land. Camp will take place June 8-12th from 1-4:30 pm each afternoon and ends with a performance at 7:00 pm on Friday night. Before registering, please make sure that your child will be able to participate in the final performance. All are welcome to participate, and no solo singing or speaking is required. However, those interested in solo roles will have the opportunity to try out for one. Auditions will be held for those interested on Sunday, June 7th.  Camp is open to students who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade. The cost of the camp is $100 and includes a t-shirt which will be worn for the performance, snacks, and all materials needed for the week. Register here.

VILLAGE PRESCHOOL ENROLLMENT: Now enrolling! Village Church Preschool at Mission Campus is a NAEYC accredited preschool guided by the HighScope curriculum and taught by Early Childhood Education/Elementary Education degreed professionals in every classroom.  Our quality programming began in 1975 and continues today, serving second-generation students! We are committed to meeting each child where they are in their development. We strive to provide an atmosphere where each child feels safe and able to learn skills at their own rate. VILLAGE PARENT’S DAY OUT: Now enrolling! Looking for a safe, loving, and engaging place for your little one while you take care of your day? Our state licensed Parents Day Out program is designed to give children a fun, nurturing environment to learn, play, and develop social-emotional skills, while giving parents peace of mind and a few hours off duty. Class runs from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays. Choose the day(s) that fit your family’s schedule, from one to four days per week. Our parents like to mix and match! Children must be 2 years old by Sept. 1 of enrollment year to join PDO. Enroll here.

OPEN PLAY TIME – 9-noon, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Grownups and their littles are welcome to come play in the kid nook in our Young Adult Room until noon. Grab a coffee while you’re there!

MAHJONG MONDAYS – 6:30-8 p.m., 2nd Mondays Mission Campus Room 230, 3rd Mondays Antioch Campus Multi-Purpose Room. Do you play Mahjong? We’re starting groups to play on the 2nd and 3rd Mondays each month – 6:30-8 p.m. Email to RSVP to ensure adequate supplies and enough players. Bring tiles if you have them!
