Poinsettia Ministry

Donate a Poinsettia

Honor a loved one and fund this ministry with a $15 donation towards a poinsettia plant. Your loved one(s)’s name(s) will be printed in the Christmas Eve bulletin (please include one name per donation). Donate online or send the name(s) with a check ($15/person) to Karen Reimer, Village Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS 66208 by Dec. 6. Help Deliver Poinsettias

An annual Village tradition is delivering the donated poinsettias to our homebound members. Sign up to deliver throughout the metro area—you choose where and how many to deliver on Sat., Dec. 7. Email Linda Alley to sign up (or call 913-671-2327).

Pastoral Care Committee

Pastoral Care & Counseling committee members work with the pastors to participate, maintain and propose new ways to provide care for our members and the community. Like most Village Church committees, the committee meets once a month (usually third Mondays), and asks volunteers to serve a 3-year term. Contact Linda if you think serving on the Pastoral Care Committee sounds like a way you would like to participate in the life of the church.

Computer Ministry

The mission of the Computer Ministry is to provide rebuilt personal computers and training in basic computer skills to selected charitable organizations in the Kansas City area. The Computer Ministry was established in 2001 on a foundation of friendship and relationships. The ministry has developed partnerships with Habitat for Humanity and other not-for-profit organizations.

There are two ways you can help:

• Donate Used Tech Equipment: Team members remove all private data from every PC donated to the ministry. The computer’s operating system is then reconfigured as appropriate for its intended application, and new software is installed before donation to a strategic partner organization. The following pieces of equipment are accepted:
  • Apple iMac or Macintosh models cannot be accepted
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop computers or laptops
  • Working LCD or LED monitors (at least 20 inch)
  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Power cables
  • CD-ROM, CD Writer or DVD Writer drives
  • Laser-type Printers (no Inkjet printers)

• Refurbish Used Tech Equipment: Team members analyze donated PCs and test components to determine how to best utilize the equipment. Usable components are combined to build working computers for the ministry’s strategic partners (charitable or educational institutions). Each volunteer may choose tasks that best suit his or her interests and abilities. Refurbishing Team working sessions meet 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays at the Tillotson Building (Food Pantry): Enter the front sliding doors, then proceed to the far right door. One-on-one orientation sessions are held periodically for new volunteers; email us to let us know you’re interested.

Child Care (Weekdays)

Come play with little ones! Rock a baby, read a book to a toddler, color a picture, play trucks, or have a pretend tea party. All while allowing the parents of these tiny tots a much-needed break, with the knowledge that their children are being cared for and loved in a safe environment. Volunteers will be trained and are required to have a background check completed by Village before volunteering with children. Help is needed Monday/Wednesday/Friday in the mornings.

Child Care (Sundays)

Come play and take care of the youngest Village attendees during worship on Sundays! Rock a baby, read a book to a toddler, color a picture, play trucks, or have a pretend tea party. All while allowing the parents of these tiny tots to attend service knowing that their children are being cared for and loved in a safe environment. Volunteers will be trained and are required to have a background check completed by Village before volunteering with children. Be placed on a rotating schedule, or let us know when you’re able to volunteer. Volunteers may work in the nursery or toddler room during any service at Mission Campus.

Ushers/VERT

Ushers offer the gift of hospitality to our members and visitors. Ushering is a unique opportunity which includes three main responsibilities: greeting worshippers, passing out bulletins and help collect the offering. Research shows that when guests are greeted and recognized that they are more likely to return, join and get connected. The work of ushers actually supports the ministers and church staff by the service of hospitality they offer.

VERT (Village Emergency Response Team) members ​receive training and serve as a responder to any medical emergencies that may arise during Sunday worship or other large Village Church gatherings, until professional medical attention arrives.

Children’s Ministry Greeter

On Sunday mornings before worship (8:45-8:55 a.m.) Children’s Ministry needs folks on the 1st floor and 3rd floor in the education wing to be a hospitable presence and assist people in finding classes. Volunteer for a month, once per month or when your schedule allows.

Kids Sunday School Teacher

Teach a Lighthouse class—open to flexible schedules such as teaching a semester, a certain Sunday of the month, quarterly, or rotating (lessons and materials provided). Classes range from preschool through 6th grade.

Summer VBS

Help with summer Vacation Family Bible School (1-3 evenings of commitment over the course of three weeks). Involves help with setup, tear down, guiding children and families with the night’s project and helping serve dinner. Dinner is provided for all volunteers. Volunteers can be teens through adults. Children’s Ministry Office

Reception Desk

We are seeking volunteers to help answer the phones at the Mission Campus south reception desk occasionally for 2-4 hours during the 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. workday Monday through Friday. The phone system is very easy to learn, it’s a great place to see lots of people and it’s an ideal position if you are interested in a job that doesn’t require a regular commitment.

Youth Leader

We couldn’t do youth ministry without the support of amazing volunteers. With many programs going on throughout the year, we have lots of opportunities for you to help.

• Weekly Volunteer Youth Group Leader: In addition to our staff, we have several adult volunteers who attend either MS or HS youth group each week. High schoolers (sophomore year and up) are also eligible to be leaders at middle school youth group. Typically this commitment is for one school year, but occasionally leaders roll on or off at the semester.
• Lofternoons Leader: This after-school program has historically been very popular, so we appreciate having additional adults (and high schoolers) simply to have eyes around the room and be able to interact and get to know students. This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in helping out every once in a while, but isn’t able to commit weekly.
• Confirmation Small Group Leader: Each Confirmation class (end of January through end of April) is taught by one of our youth directors or another departmental director or pastor. But, the class is broken into small discussion groups led by adults like you! Group leaders maintain the same group each class. It’s always a rewarding experience helping facilitate students growing in their faith and a great opportunity for adults to learn as well.
• Event Driver: Occasionally, youth ministry will attend an offsite event in the area. We always need more adult drivers to lend a hand transporting all the kids to the new location and getting everyone back safely.

Youth Trip Chaperone

We are always in need of additional adults to chaperone our youth trips. Responsibilities generally include ensuring student safetyk assisting our staff directors, leading small groups, sometimes driving and sometimes navigating air travel. You do not have to be a member of Village Church or have a child in Youth Group to be a trip chaperone. College students and older are welcome.

Mission Sewing

Mission Sewing makes and distributes items for schools, hospitals, nursing homes, local and international agencies. This productive group is open to women of all ages who enjoy machine sewing, hand sewing, knitting, crocheting and good fellowship. Non-sewers are welcome too for cutting, counting, pressing and other tasks. At-home projects are available as well.

The group meets each Tuesday (9 a.m.-noon) and Thursday (10 a.m.-noon) at our Mission Campus in the Sewing Room (Room 115). All you have to do to volunteer is drop by the Sewing Room during one of those times.

Scripture Readers

Scripture readers assist in worship by reading the Scripture preceding the sermon.

Sacristy

The Sacristy Committee is responsible for preparing the elements for the Lord’s Supper and maintaining the communion ware and table linens. For Sunday communion, preparation begins on Saturday morning when we cut bread and fill cups with juice. We finish setting the tables in the Sanctuary and the Narthex Sunday morning and clean everything up after the last service. The committee meets once a year, in January, to sign up for the communion dates approved by Session.

New volunteers are needed and welcome at any time throughout the year.
