The book of Romans in the New Testament is the Apostle Paul’s last and longest letter. He is writing to the new Christian community in Rome. Many Bible scholars view Romans as the culmination of Paul’s theology. He is sharing all that he has come to know about Jesus Christ and what it means to follow him. In today’s scripture reading, he offers us a list of what it means to be a true Christian, a true Christ follower. In 1863, in the midst of the civil war, President Lincoln proclaimed the first national day of Thanksgiving. Now as we prepare for our 156th American Thanksgiving, the Apostle’s list offers us a way to gather around the table and truly be thankful. Our scripture reading is Romans 12:9-18.
