Theology
Meeting Amy-Jill Levine
Amy-Jill Levine will be the PW Visiting Scholar on April 24th and 25th (see page 22). A leading scholar on Jesus, Dr. Levine is a practicing orthodox Jew and teaches New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. She describes herself as a “Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Protestant divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt.” Come and get acquainted with her in advance of her visit to Village Church through viewing and discussing some of her video lectures on key New Testament figures. Taught by Gus Breytspraak, M.Div., Ph.D., Village Church Member and Professor of Social Ethics at Ottawa University Greater Kansas City. Tuesdays, March 3 and 10. 6:30-8:00pm. Room 132.
Visiting Scholar Follow-up: Discussion on Amy-Jill Levine with Bill Tammeus
Join Bill Tammeus, the Kansas City Star’s “Faith Matters” blogger and former columnist, in a follow-up discussion to the PW Visiting Scholar lecture, featuring Amy-Jill Levine. In this one-time session, Tammeus will facilitate conversation about the major themes presented in Dr. Levine's lectures, including the Jewish Jesus, the parables as seen through Jesus' eyes and Christian-Jewish relations. The Visiting Scholar lectures, sponsored by Presbyterian Women, are designed to offer fresh and challenging ideas, and to encourage questions, dialogue and critical thinking on issues of our faith. Tuesday, April 28. 6:30-8:00pm. Rooms 232/233.
