Village University ▪  Spring Schedule 2009

Literature

A Sampling of Shakespeare

T.S. Eliot once wrote, "Dante and Shakespeare divide the modern world between them; there is no third." This course will examine Shakespeare's influence on humanity and society, both then and today. We will read and study six plays, comprising comedies, tragedies, and a romance.  We will facilitate discussions about culture, religion, art, history, relationships, and everything else Shakespeare has to offer. Please come to the first class having read (or reread) A Midsummer Night's Dream.  In addition, we will read Othello, The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, King Lear, and The Tempest. We will use the Signet Classic versions of the text, which are very scholarly (ie. cheap), though any annotated versions of the plays will work. Instructors: Kelly Fast and Michael Pulsinelli. Tuesdays, January 13, 20, 27 and February 3, 10 and 17. 6:30-8:00pm. Room 233.

Reading Aloud

Tips for reading aloud: scripture, poems and short stories. Feel free to bring your own work to share aloud. Led by Marie Asner of Imago Dei. Wednesday, February 4. 6:30-8:00pm. Room 133.

Exploring Faith Through Poetry
Since the Psalms of the Bible, poetry has been used to express reverence to God, explain the mystery, and build our relationship with God.  We will examine classic poetry from George MacDonald, Madeleine L'Engle, T. S. Eliot, and others. Led by Lori Triplett, Executive Director of Imago Dei. Sundays, February 22; March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. 9:30-10:30am. Room 133.
