Focus on the Elderly Caregiver
This class will offer powerful tools of self preservation for those who provide elder care to seniors. Learn ways to save on long-term care costs, gain family support for the caregiver, receive advice on key legal/financial documents, better understand Medicare’s Part A and B, prescription drugs, supplement and advantage plans as well as LTC insurance and the current state of our challenged Medicaid program. Taught by Carol and Raymond Smith, Professors at Avila University. Tuesdays, February 3, 10, 17, 24. 6:30-8:00pm. Room 233.
Heartsaver CPR/AED Class
Heart attack, drowning, electric shock, drug overdose and other problems may cause a person’s heart to stop pumping blood. This is called cardiac arrest. Studies show that effective CPR right away improves survival from cardiac arrest. Most cardiac arrests happen outside the hospital where bystander CPR is really important. You can make a difference, and the first step is learning CPR! You never know when someone you know and/or love will need your CPR skills. The American Heart Association designed the Heartsaver CPR/AED course to prepare first responders who may need to:
•perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
•use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
•help someone who is choking
The course will teach the above skills as they apply to adults, children and infants. Upon completion of the class you will receive a Heartsaver AED certification card. Taught by Caryl Herman, certified CPR/AED instructor and Village Church member. Three separate sessions are available; CHOOSE ONE: Tuesday, January 27, 6:00-10:00pm, Room 126; OR Thursday, January 29, 9:00am-1:00pm, Room 132; OR Saturday, January 31, 9:00am-1:00pm, Room 132.
Grief and Loss
Grief and loss are part of everyday living. To live is to be familiar with loss. The circle of life goes on whether we are prepared or not. In this class, the stages of grief will be explored. You will also learn many helpful ways to keep our hearts open to love and how to look forward to what may be coming in place of what we have lost. Taught by Penny Shaffer, RN, BA, MA, Program Director for Health and Human Services at Johnson County Community College. This same class is being offered at two different times in Room 132. CHOOSE ONE: Tuesday, March 3, 1:30-3:00pm; OR Thursday, April 2, 6:30-8:00pm. This course is free.
